As you know, I am obsessed with axolotl and that’s why I couldn’t help to design another cute axolotl amigurumi for this holiday! It was an old amigurumi design but I never published and just redo it so that it has the Christmas vibe! Difficulty Level

Level required: Intermediate but it is also a beginner-friendly free amigurumi crochet pattern.

Make Magic Ring (MR)

Basic crochet stitches for amigurumi

Increase and invisible decrease crochet

How to finish the amigurumi part neatly

How to crochet with multiple strands from one yarn ball

Materials and tools

  • DK yarn in white and red
  • 2.5mm hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Polyfill
  • Stitch marker
  • Embroidery thread: black and white

Abbreviations (Symbols- US term)

You might not use all the abbreviations in the amigurumi crochet pattern but I still want to show you all just to refer. They are all easy to remember and follow.

MR: magic ring
CH: chain
X – sc: Single crochet
T -hdc: half double crochet
F – dc: double crochet
E – tr: Triple crochet
V – inc: Increase (make 2 stitches in 1 stitch)

W – 3 sts in same st: (make 3 stitches in 1 stitch)
A – dec: Decrease (make 1 stitch from 2 stitches)

M – make 1st from 3sts: Decrease (make 1 stitch from 3 stitches)
TV, FV, EV – hdcinc, dcinc, trinc: Increase with half double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet
TA, FA, EA – hdcdec, dcdec, trdec: Decrease with half double crochet, double crochet, and triple crochet
BLO: Back loop only
FLO: Front loop only
SS – ss: slip stitch
FO: Fasten off
St/Sts: Stitch/Stitches

Do not cut the yarn and continue to the body. You can stuff if you make an ornament, no stuff if you make a brooch.

ANTENNA (MAKE 2) of the Christmas axolotl brooch

Insert yarn in row 3 of the head. This is surface crochet, if you want step by step photo tutorial, consider getting the Premium Pattern.

ch, (4ch, crochet in the second loop from hook 3sc, ss in the first ch)*3. 

FO. Hide the yarn tail.

TAIL – AXOLOTL AMIGURUMI FREE PATTERN

Red yarn

Insert the yarn in the left side of row 7 of the body, and crochet on the surface around the triangle of the body. 

(ss, 3ch, 2dc, ss)*2. FO. Hide the yarn tail.

SCARF – Christmas axolotl ornament

Red Yarn

 20ch. FO. Hide the yarn tail.

FINISHING

Embroider the face, put on the scarf.

Use glue/sew the brooch base/safety pin to make a brooch or add the string to use it as a Christmas animal crochet ornament.
